Fire (1996)

The debut film of the trilogy, Fire (1996), takes place in modern-day India and caused significant controversy among certain conservative groups in India due to its portrayal of lesbian characters.

Earth (1998)

Earth (1998), also known as 1947: Earth in India, recounts the story of the partition of India in 1947, seen through the eyes of a young Parsi girl. Despite being the Indian nominee for the 2000 72nd Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, the film was not chosen as one of the final five nominees by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Water (2005)

The last film of the trilogy, Water (2005), is set in the 1930s and shines a light on the struggles of a group of destitute widows living in an ashram. Water received a nomination for the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, making it the first non-French-language Canadian film to be nominated in that category. Additionally, the song “Aayo Re Sakhi” was included in the final list for Oscar nomination.
