In the summer of the Lord in 984, the young prince Einon (L. Oakes) witnesses the death of his father in a battle against rebellious peasants. The badly wounded Einon himself is saved by his mentor, the knight Bowen (D. Quaid), who teaches him honor, swordsmanship and knightly behavior from an early age.

Bowen and Einon’s mother, Queen Aislinn (J. Christie), take the mortally wounded prince to the cave where the dragon Draco (voice: Sean Connery) lives to revive him with his breath. Einon survives, but twelve years later, as the new king (D. Thewlis), he turns into a cruel tyrant. Considering the dragon to blame for such a turn, Bowen abandons his protégé and devotes himself to the extermination of dragons.

But he meets Draco again, the last of these mythical creatures, and realizing his mistake, teams up with him to save the kingdom from the ruler’s tyrannical rule.

In the Middle Ages lives Geoffrey (C. Masterson), a young groom who works for a monastery and whose biggest dream in life is to become a knight. Little does he know that the well-kept secret he will accidentally discover one day in the underground chambers of the monastery will change his life forever. Namely, one of the monastery’s brothers, Peter, feeds and looks after a young dragon, perhaps the last one in the world.

The dragon’s name is Drake (voiced by Robby Benson). After the death of his brother Peter, Geoffrey decides to bring Drake out into the light of day and enable him to live a more normal and natural life. But what Geoffrey doesn’t know is the danger that such an undertaking entails. Namely, the ancient prophecy prescribed that the dragon’s heart can become evil on the night of the comet, which is four days away.

Therefore, a wandering sage Kwan (Henry O) and a girl disguised as a young man Lian (R. Figueroa) arrive from China to try to prevent such a prophecy and kill the dragon. Meanwhile, the king’s advisor Lord Osric of Crossley (H. Van Gorkum) has plans of his own…

A New Beginning is a sequel to Dragonheart, the first direct-to-video film in the series, the movie with the shortest runtime and the only one rated PG.
