Michael Collins (1996)
Ireland was a colony of the British kingdom for 700 years. The desire of the Irish for independence never waned, and it culminated in Easter 1916, during the armed rebellion, when the Dublin post office was attacked. The British government ruthlessly suppressed the uprising, and immediately shot the leaders. Among the rebellious Irish patriots were young Michael Collins (L. Neeson) and his best friend and comrade Harry Boland (A. Quinn). Since that time, Collins has been the main organizer of the “invisible army” that fights with weapons against, as they say, the British occupation. They kill all the people who represent the British government – policemen, soldiers, secret agents. The first part of the film shows that struggle and the way it was organized.
A big help to Collins is Ned Broy (S. Rea), a clerk who works for the British authorities. He is his chief spy. Broy even gave Collins access to British files on him and his comrades from the Irish Republican Army. Collins and the “shadow government”, headed by President Eamon De Valera (A. Rickman), dream of an independent Republic of Ireland. In the short breaks between the wars, Collins meets the beautiful Kitty Kiernan (J. Roberts), with whom he will later enter into a romantic relationship. De Valera, who is arrested by the British, escapes from prison and goes to America, where he seeks support from President Wilson.
Little by little, the English also agree to negotiations, and De Valera sends the diplomatically inexperienced Collins, whom the English public considers a terrorist and a murderer, as a negotiator. Collins achieved as much as he could: for the British government to agree to the establishment of a free state of Ireland, which would have its own government but be part of the British kingdom. The eternal fighter Collins is convinced that he has achieved a lot and that the bloodshed will stop. De Valera and other Irish politicians are not satisfied, because they want an independent republic…
