In London, after an explosion in a pub, he was arrested by the police with three friends. Under pressure from the public and eager to find the culprits as soon as possible, the policemen interrogate them so harshly and physically torture them that the four innocent accused confess they are terrorists. Because of this, the police arrest Conlon’s entire family and some other people, accusing them of participating in the preparation of the assassination. Gerry will be sentenced to life imprisonment, with the proviso that he must spend at least thirty years in prison, and his father (P. Postlethwaite) will also be sentenced.

In prison, father and son become very close. Five years later, they learn from a jailed IRA member that he told the police that the Conlons had nothing to do with the bombing. Then their case is taken over by the English lawyer Gareth Peirce (E. Thompson), and with her help, Gerry will prove his and his father’s innocence. Nevertheless, even though he is innocent, Gerry will spend fourteen years in prison. He will also write a book about his case, which was made into a movie.
