In the first film ever filmed inside a Smithsonian museum complex, the fun begins after Larry leaves his low-paying job as a museum custodian to become the sought-after inventor of Daley Devices advertising information products. It seems that his life has finally started – but still, he is missing something, something that pulls him to revisit his old love, the New York museum where he once lived the magical night of his life.
However, an unpleasant surprise awaits him there. His favorite exhibits, that is, his best friends, were removed from the museum as obsolete. These freshly arrived exhibits from New York seem to have awakened old digs, including the Egyptian ruler Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria), who after 3,000 years of peaceful sleep is in a particularly evil mood.
