Dedicated to the preservation of Egyptian art, Ventura sketches as soldiers destroy the sphinxes. During the desert battle, Augustin and Ventura become separated from their unit. Distraught, Ventura commits suicide, and Augustin survives by wandering through the sand to a deep canyon. There he encounters a wild leopard with whom he befriends, developing a non-verbal communication with the animal that saves his life and teaches him to appreciate other forms of life.
