The series is set in a fictional version of Malibu, California, where all of its inhabitants are dolls. The dolls behave like humans, though a number of the show’s gags rely on their doll-like nature. The series centers on the life of Barbie, her friends, her siblings, her boyfriend, Ken and a number of pets.

Barbie takes a road trip to the Kingdom of Floravia, having been invited by Floravia’s princess Amelia. Barbie agrees, and Amelia goes on to enjoy a week of freedom before her coronation.
Amelia is kidnapped by her fiancé Prince Johan, who uncovers the ruse and wants to force Amelia to marry him so he can rule both his country and Floravia. Barbie rescues Amelia, and they foil Johan’s plot. Afterward, Amelia is crowned, and both Barbie and Amelia agree to remain true to themselves.

The film plot centers on Barbie’s in-universe youngest sister, Chelsea Roberts, as she goes on a fantasy-themed adventure on a jungle island to save her 7th birthday she thinks is lost whiles with her family on an adventure cruise ship which by one late night crosses the International Date Line.
