6 Days in Cape Town: Table Mountain Hikes and Wine Country
There’s something utterly magnetic about Cape Town. Maybe it’s the way Table Mountain looms like a protective guardian over the city, or the scent of sea air that follows you through cobblestone streets and trendy cafes. As a solo female traveler, I found Cape Town to be a perfect balance of wild adventure and laid-back charm.
In just six days, you can summit epic trails, sip your way through world-class vineyards, and dive headfirst into South Africa’s vibrant culture. This itinerary blends nature, food, and local experiences in a way that’s unforgettable—especially if you love pairing mountain hikes with a glass of Pinotage.
Day 1: Getting Settled and Sunset at Signal Hill
Start your Cape Town adventure with a slow-paced exploration of the V&A Waterfront, a bustling hub of restaurants, local designers, and ocean views. It’s a great place to get your bearings and try fresh seafood at Willoughby & Co, especially if you’re craving sushi.
By late afternoon, take a short drive or Uber up to Signal Hill for one of the most iconic sunset views in the city. Pack a light jacket and a blanket if you’re into picnicking—the panoramic view of Table Mountain, the city bowl, and the Atlantic Ocean makes it a stunning (and free) experience.
Day 2: Table Mountain via the Platteklip Gorge
It’s time to tackle the big one—Table Mountain. The Platteklip Gorge trail is the most direct hiking route and can be steep, but the sense of accomplishment is absolutely worth it. Start early, around 7 a.m., to avoid the sun and the crowds.
Don’t forget to bring water, snacks, and layers—the weather can change quickly at the summit. If you prefer a more relaxed climb, opt for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway on the way down, which offers breathtaking aerial views of the city and coastline.
Day 3: Kirstenbosch and Constantia Wine Tasting
Recover those legs with a peaceful morning at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, nestled on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. It’s one of the most beautiful gardens I’ve ever visited, especially if you catch it in bloom between September and April.
Just a short drive away is Constantia, the oldest wine-producing region in the Southern Hemisphere. Spend the afternoon wine tasting at estates like Groot Constantia or Beau Constantia, where you can enjoy bold reds, crisp whites, and farm-to-table lunches with vineyard views.
Day 4: Day Trip to Cape Point and Boulders Beach
Rent a car or join a guided tour for a scenic day trip down the Cape Peninsula. The drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive is nothing short of cinematic, with sheer cliffs plunging into turquoise waters.
At Cape Point, take the funicular up to the old lighthouse, and don’t forget your camera—the views are unreal. On your way back, stop at Boulders Beach to see the famous colony of African penguins waddling and sunbathing just steps away from you.
Day 5: Bo-Kaap and Local Cuisine
Start the day in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town’s most colorful and culturally rich neighborhood. The pastel-colored houses make for perfect photos, but it’s the Cape Malay culture that makes this area truly special. Consider booking a cooking class with a local host to learn how to make traditional dishes like bobotie and samosas.
Later, explore Long Street and Bree Street, where you’ll find a mix of trendy eateries, art galleries, and rooftop bars. I loved dining at The Pot Luck Club for its elevated small plates and skyline views—make a reservation well in advance.
Day 6: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Wine Route
Your final day is all about indulgence. Head to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, two of South Africa’s premier wine regions. These towns are straight out of a postcard, with Cape Dutch architecture, leafy streets, and more than enough tasting rooms to keep you busy.
If you want to skip driving, the Franschhoek Wine Tram is a fun and safe way to hop between vineyards. Look out for favorites like Spier Wine Farm, Delaire Graff Estate, and La Motte. By sunset, you’ll understand why this region is a must for any wine lover visiting Cape Town.
