5 Days in Prague: Fairytale Castles & Medieval Charm
Stepping into Prague feels like walking into a living storybook. Cobblestone streets wind through medieval squares, ancient towers rise above red-roofed houses, and Gothic spires pierce the sky in every direction. If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering through a city of enchantment, this Central European gem delivers in full.
Over five magical days, I explored Prague’s fairytale castles, hauntingly beautiful cathedrals, and cozy cafés hidden in winding alleyways. Whether you’re a history buff, a photography lover, or simply chasing the romance of old-world Europe, Prague’s charm is undeniable—and here’s exactly how to soak it all in.

Day 1: Old Town Magic and Astronomical Marvels

Start your journey in the heart of Prague’s Old Town, where history comes alive at every turn. The Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square is a crowd-pleaser, chiming each hour with a little mechanical show that delights visitors of all ages. Get there early to beat the crowds and grab a coffee with a view of the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn.

After soaking up the atmosphere, wander along Celetná Street toward Powder Tower, one of the original city gates, and climb to the top for a stunning introduction to the city’s skyline. Don’t miss trying a warm trdelník, the sweet chimney pastry sold at almost every corner—it’s touristy, sure, but irresistible.
Day 2: Castle Views and Royal Walks

No trip to Prague is complete without a visit to Prague Castle, the world’s largest ancient castle complex. Go early in the morning to walk the cobbled courtyards in peace and enjoy breathtaking views from the St. Vitus Cathedral’s tower. The stained-glass windows inside the cathedral are truly a kaleidoscope of color, especially when the morning light hits just right.

Afterwards, stroll down the romantic Golden Lane, once home to castle guards and alchemists. It’s touristy but feels like something out of a Grimm tale. Finish your day in Lobkowicz Palace if you’re into art and classical music—the panoramic terrace is a dreamy spot for late afternoon tea.
Day 3: Bridges, Boats, and Baroque Beauty

Dedicate your third day to the iconic Charles Bridge. Walk across early in the morning for that perfect misty view of statues lining the path, with Prague Castle in the distance. The bridge can get packed by midday, so I recommend looping back via the Vltava River on a scenic boat cruise—a relaxing way to see the city from a new angle.

In the afternoon, explore the Klementinum, a stunning baroque complex just steps from the bridge. If you’re a book lover like me, the Baroque Library Hall will absolutely take your breath away. It’s straight out of a fantasy novel and one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.
Day 4: Lesser-Known Jewels and Hidden Cafés

Escape the crowds and explore Vyšehrad, a historic fortress perched on a cliff with sweeping views over the Vltava. This peaceful area is where locals go to escape the tourist hustle. Walk the fortress walls, visit the quiet Vyšehrad Cemetery, and admire the neo-Gothic Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul.

Later, head to the hip neighborhood of Vinohrady for a different side of Prague. Think leafy parks, art deco buildings, and some of the city’s best cafés. I had the fluffiest pancakes and best oat milk cappuccino of my trip at Café Jen—the perfect reward for a day of quiet wandering.
Day 5: Art, Markets, and One Last Look

Wrap up your 5-day adventure with a dive into Prague’s creative side. The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art offers a sharp contrast to the city’s medieval charm, showcasing bold, thought-provoking exhibits. If street art is more your thing, check out the colorful John Lennon Wall, which has been evolving since the 1980s.
End your trip at Letná Park, where a beer garden overlooks the city’s spires and bridges. Come for sunset—the golden light over Prague’s rooftops is nothing short of magical. It’s the kind of view that makes you want to linger just a little longer, soaking up the fairytale before you go.
